DUL ÇCU > DUL-ÇoCU (Dul çocuğu) > widow's child This word is read on page 44r. Normally these are two separate words. The author combined these separate words and wrote them as a single word. You may remember that I mentioned that the author combined some words and wrote some words by separating them into syllables. Therefore, the existence of this situation could be clearly understood when reading the texts. Here we see that the word DUL has not changed its phonetic form in approximately 600 years. In the word "ÇCU" (çOcu/çocuğu), the letter O is not written between the sounds Ç and C. Even though the author does not write this letter, the word can be easily understood since this does not affect the phonetic form of the word a lot. Approximately 21% of the words throughout the entire VM writing (about 240 pages) are easily readable in this way. The remaining ones are a little more difficult to understand due to reasons such as abbreviation spelling and dividing syllables or combining words, but over time they will also become readable. Since the author preferred the texts to be difficult to read, he must have combined the words or written some words by separating them into syllables. Abbreviated words also serve the same purpose. However, in almost all periods of Old Turkish, it was quite common to write some consonants without vowels next to them, and examples of this can be seen in almost all inscriptions and old manuscripts.
